Are You Wired and Tired? 6 Steps to Boost Your Energy and Mental Focus | Part 1

“Habits are the answer to anything we want to change in life.  They control what we do, and eventually, they make what we do easy and automatic.”  – Steve Chandler Energy:  I want more of it. Don’t you?  So why is it such a battle to stay energized? Why, when we ask each other, “How are you?” the answer is more-often-than-not: “I’m SOOO tired.” What’s behind all this exhaustion? What’s sapping us of our energy?  Is it lack of sleep?  Eating the wrong foods?  Stress?  All of the above? On the flipside, what about those times where we’re really having fun or discovering a new passion and all of a sudden, we feel like we could conquer the world? We [...]

Even fitness professionals have goals when it comes to their strength and fitness.  And I’m no different. I have been training consistently.  I was doing my strength workouts 2-3 times a week, my cardio interval workout 2-3 times a week.  I was pushing myself, and working hard.  But I wasn’t making progress.  So, I cleaned up my diet, too.  I limited the number of processed carbs (fast-burning white carbs like sugar, bread, pasta and rice) I was eating, increased my healthy proteins (chicken, grass fed beef, turkey) and I even starting taking supplements (pre-and post-workout – multivitamins, fish oil, calcium and magnesium) to improve performance and my recovery… There it was, right in front of me… the reason I was [...]

“We don’t rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.” -Archilochus How is it going so far this year?  Are you on track with your goals?  As we enter the third week of January, when many people have already given up on their resolutions, are you finding yourself in an exercise rut as you work toward your new lifestyle change? Well, then… stop exercising! Exercise is a temporary solution to a permanent issue. Instead of exercising, you need to start training. Training is ongoing. We have become a nation of instant gratification. Thanks to technology, we expect things to be, literally, at our fingertips at any given moment. Because of this, when we don't receive the favorable results we're after, we tend to think the effort isn’t worth it and we move on. But some things take time; in fact, they take an entire lifetime. Some people have completely “let themselves go” for years, and then might expect to be able to transform themselves in their first 30 days back in the gym.  This rarely, if ever, happens.  So, in order to be successful, what we are really looking to transform are your HABITS.  They say that the best way to create change in [...]

I hear it time and again:  “I just don’t have the time to work out.”  This is the adult version of “My dog ate my homework.”  And it's the biggest STORY we tell ourselves so we can avoid making the commitment we know need to make to exercise, eat clean and live a healthier life. I have dealt with this issue many times, both in my own life and in the very busy lives of the clients with whom I work.  I want to give you a few strategies that have worked for them in the hopes that you, too, can overcome these lies we tell ourselves.  In this way, you will be able to create a new “story” for [...]

I spend a lot of time writing about the importance of moving and telling you how it improves your energy, overall health and vitality. And it is so important to get off our butts (do it now, I say -- stand up and move around!) and engage in vigorous exercise (which really only needs to be done 3-4 times a week for maximum effectiveness).  In fact, working out too much is not good for you, especially if you are skipping the most important part of your workout, the recovery phase. I have discussed numerous options for improving your recovery time, the 3 most important of which are:  getting optimal nutrition (including what you eat before, during and after your workouts), [...]

If you are new to the gym scene and working out, this discussion may not be for you.  But if you go to the gym everyday or spend 3 hours each time you’re there, then yes, this post may be for you. Do you ever ask yourself why you work out so much?   Now, let me be clear:  there are A LOT of benefits to working out everyday, but like everything else, doing too much of something good, can become something not-so-good.   Here are a few examples of good things that happen when you work out a lot: You move more every day You see your friends at the gym and get a chance to socialize and move (DOUBLE [...]

Turn Your Body into a Fat Burning Machine with these 2 Workouts (You Must Do)

“If you only had 3 hours a week to workout… what would you chose to do?” People ask me this question all the time. They want to know which workout will give them the biggest bang for their time. They want to get rid of “this” (imagine them squeezing some area of their body (belly, thigh, butt) and want to know what workout will make it go away… The first workout all of us need to do usually takes place in our kitchen. Imagine doing a heavy round of weighted swings (like opening the cupboards and fridge door), followed by some overhead slams (as in slamming all the sodas, chips, cookies and any other sugar-ladened-heavily processed food that just makes [...]
