Are You Wired and Tired? 6 Steps to Boost Your Energy and Mental Focus | Part 1

“Habits are the answer to anything we want to change in life.  They control what we do, and eventually, they make what we do easy and automatic.”  – Steve Chandler Energy:  I want more of it. Don’t you?  So why is it such a battle to stay energized? Why, when we ask each other, “How are you?” the answer is more-often-than-not: “I’m SOOO tired.” What’s behind all this exhaustion? What’s sapping us of our energy?  Is it lack of sleep?  Eating the wrong foods?  Stress?  All of the above? On the flipside, what about those times where we’re really having fun or discovering a new passion and all of a sudden, we feel like we could conquer the world? We [...]

BE A ROAD WARRIOR – 5 TRAVEL TIPS TO HELP YOU STAY FIT AND HEALTHY WHILE ON THE ROAD

Reality is that we can always find an excuse to justify bad choices when it comes to working out and eating healthy.   Our “default mode” will probably be to gravitate to eating a little too much of the things we shouldn’t and moving less than we should, which is not the ideal combination.  And this is never more true than when we are on the road traveling and out of our home element – being away on the road places additional stresses on our health and fitness regimens. Therefore, DECIDING what you are going to do ahead of time is always ideal.  Then, in the moment, if you take a second to be mindful, chances are going to be in [...]

WHAT TO STRETCH & WHAT TO STRENGTHEN FOR ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE LIVING

I really like this idea of HIGH PERFORMANCE LIVING, the idea that we can make small, consistent changes to our mind, body and lifestyles so that we can live a fuller, more focused and productive life. In my last blog, I spoke about ways to AVOID GETTING INJURED when you exercise… and I’d like to expand on that idea a bit more.  I might GEEK OUT a little bit here, but I feel this is an important concept to understand when it comes to how we approach our workout.  This goes a little deeper than just discussing chest press and bicep curls, and I am hoping you will enjoy a deeper understanding of ways to approach your workout  that keep you [...]

THE BIGGEST LIE WE TELL OURSELVES (HOW TO OVERCOME IT)

I hear it time and again:  “I just don’t have the time to work out.”  This is the adult version of “My dog ate my homework.”  And it's the biggest STORY we tell ourselves so we can avoid making the commitment we know need to make to exercise, eat clean and live a healthier life. I have dealt with this issue many times, both in my own life and in the very busy lives of the clients with whom I work.  I want to give you a few strategies that have worked for them in the hopes that you, too, can overcome these lies we tell ourselves.  In this way, you will be able to create a new “story” for [...]

THE POWER OF DECIDING: DO JUST ONE THING

People often ask me what I believe is the most important step to take when it comes to losing weight and getting more fit. “Should I focus on my diet?”  “What is the best type of exercise for fat loss, cardio or strength training?”  Well, if you’ve read any of my posts, you know I’ve covered these topics.  But I now have to admit I wasn’t exactly right. I’ve discovered that it’s not diet or exercise that must be conquered first:  It’s your mind.  It’s your psychology.  It’s you making a decision… it’s you deciding that losing weight and living a fit life is your vision and it’s what you want. It's the little voice inside your head that is [...]

WHAT IS A RECOVERY “WORKOUT” and… WHY YOU MUST HAVE ONE

Drink chocolate milk. Yep, when I looked up, “Recovery Workouts” on good old Google, that's what came up as a suggested way to recover after a hard workout.   That's great advice:  on your recovery day, drink CRAP, it will help you build muscle. Oh, I know what they say.   It’s got protein in it.  Well, so does road kill.  And road kill has less sugar than that garbage.  Does this sound like a rant?  Sorry.  I just get so p*ssed off at the entire line of B.S. that is circulating around out there when it comes to helping people look and feel better. My idea of a recovery workout is different than what others espouse because what I am talking [...]

3 WAYS TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR TRAVEL (HOTEL) WORKOUT

Let’s talk travel workouts.  What do I mean by travel workouts?  A workout you do when you are on the road… at a hotel.  First of all, lets talk about the most important thing. What is your goal?  MOVE MORE. Assuming its being fit, losing weight, staying mobile (battling all that sitting, sitting in the cab, on the train, on the plane, in all day meetings, all that sitting) while traveling.  What do I mean by being mobile?  Being able to move your body through a full ROM (range of motion).  Stretching and foam rolling improve mobility, so does walking, squatting, working out, etc.  A good day is one where you can move as much as possible, without pain.  Movement [...]

THE TRUTH ABOUT FITNESS: PART 2

In Part 1 of “The Truth About Fitness”, I discussed some very basic and fundamental ways to begin building a foundation of fitness and good healthy eating habits… if you missed out, you can read it again. But what about those of you who already “get fitness”?  Do all those small habits still apply?  Like taking walks, getting up every hour and moving more all day?  What about eating less food overall, maintaining portion control and eating slowly?  As a rule of thumb, I would say that those basic, fundamental habits are of benefit to everyone.  But for those of you who do workout, and “get” fitness, your additional workouts start to give you a little more freedom (but you [...]

THE TRUTH ABOUT FITNESS: PART ONE

It’s time to come clean, and tell you the truth about fitness. Time to move past the DOGMA and the HYPERBOLE.  Time to move past the images of the skinny (note I said “skinny”, not “fit”) fitness models and the guys who show their 6-pack abs (I am one of them by the way, sorry).   And it’s time to come clean when it comes to really disclosing the ways to get fit, lose weight and feel better:  the ways that WORK. Do I sound like a broken record? Because I already told you in past blog posts that moving more and eating less are all simple steps that will move you in the right direction.  Especially when you do them [...]
