“What should I be eating for breakfast?” “Is indoor cycling a good workout?” “What can I do about my low back pain?” “Should I eliminate carbs completely?”   QUESTIONS. I get a lot of them. From friends, family and members of our health club, Breakthru Fitness.  I love questions because one of my favorite things to do is help people figure out how to address the barriers they face when it comes to reaching their goals.  But over time, I’ve changed the way I respond. I used to jump right in and start “recommending” things for people to do:   “Always focus on protein…” “Be sure you’re getting your heart rate up and pushing yourself...” “Try stretching like this...” “Let [...]

Do you believe you’re honest with yourself about most things?   Take a minute and really think about that question. It’s hard to be honest with ourselves. In fact, it takes real courage. Why? Because when we’re being completely, totally honest with ourselves, it means we have to examine the good and the bad: what gives us value (“I deserve to be healthy and strong…”)  and perhaps more importantly, what gets in the way of realizing our true potential (“but for some reason I keep cancelling my workouts.”) Why is this kind of self-inventory so hard to do? Because it means we have to take responsibility for ourselves and our choices - and not place the blame on our circumstances. Listen, [...]

Are You Wired and Tired? 6 Steps to Boost Your Energy and Mental Focus | Part 2

In my last post, we talked about three concrete steps you can take in boosting your energy and mental focus: Create and stick to a productive morning ritual. Figure out WHY you want to get fit – beyond just the run-of-the-mill physical reasons – so you can stay inspired to work out even when your energy is low. Be mindful about your food choices – what gives you energy and what saps it?     Now let’s look at the next three steps in establishing and locking in your best habits:   4. TIME MANAGEMENT I used to joke about my days feeling like a triathlon, with short periods of time where I transitioned from one event (work) to a [...]

Are You Wired and Tired? 6 Steps to Boost Your Energy and Mental Focus | Part 1

“Habits are the answer to anything we want to change in life.  They control what we do, and eventually, they make what we do easy and automatic.”  – Steve Chandler Energy:  I want more of it. Don’t you?  So why is it such a battle to stay energized? Why, when we ask each other, “How are you?” the answer is more-often-than-not: “I’m SOOO tired.” What’s behind all this exhaustion? What’s sapping us of our energy?  Is it lack of sleep?  Eating the wrong foods?  Stress?  All of the above? On the flipside, what about those times where we’re really having fun or discovering a new passion and all of a sudden, we feel like we could conquer the world? We [...]

The mental (or psychological) game to achieving success in health and fitness is one of the most overlooked strategies.  We hear over and over about what foods we should (and shouldn’t) be eating and the most effective ways to maximize our workouts.  What rarely gets discussed is the MENTAL STRATEGIES one must have in place that will launch you toward your goal of health and fitness success, and more importantly, will help keep you there. In the last 20+ years of working with clients, I have seen clients drop anywhere between 10 to 40 lbs.  I have seen them reach their goals.  What is rare, in all honesty, is their ability to STAY there.  Something -- time, stress, distractions, injury [...]

I spend a lot of time writing about the importance of moving and telling you how it improves your energy, overall health and vitality. And it is so important to get off our butts (do it now, I say -- stand up and move around!) and engage in vigorous exercise (which really only needs to be done 3-4 times a week for maximum effectiveness).  In fact, working out too much is not good for you, especially if you are skipping the most important part of your workout, the recovery phase. I have discussed numerous options for improving your recovery time, the 3 most important of which are:  getting optimal nutrition (including what you eat before, during and after your workouts), [...]

WILL SKIPPING BREAKFAST AND PUTTING BUTTER IN YOUR COFFEE HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT AND INCREASE YOUR MENTAL FOCUS? Welcome back to my tale of trying Something Completely Different in order to break through the walls I was hitting during the Nautilus Challenge in reaching my weight goals. If you missed last week’s blog, you can catch up here.  By way of quick review, I had started the Challenge with the goal of losing 10 lbs. of weight…all of which I wanted to come from body fat.  And at Week 6 of the Challenge, I was not seeing any new progress in meeting my goals and I was “stuck”.  So, I decided to try something completely different—Bulletproof Coffee. So, did skipping [...]

Let’s talk travel workouts.  What do I mean by travel workouts?  A workout you do when you are on the road… at a hotel.  First of all, lets talk about the most important thing. What is your goal?  MOVE MORE. Assuming its being fit, losing weight, staying mobile (battling all that sitting, sitting in the cab, on the train, on the plane, in all day meetings, all that sitting) while traveling.  What do I mean by being mobile?  Being able to move your body through a full ROM (range of motion).  Stretching and foam rolling improve mobility, so does walking, squatting, working out, etc.  A good day is one where you can move as much as possible, without pain.  Movement [...]

I’d like you to think about the following:  what type of car do you drive?  How well do you take care of it?  What happens to your life when your car breaks down, has problems or becomes unreliable?  In in CA, our transportation is critical to our lifestyle. Now, consider this:  what is the most important vehicle you will ever own?  Here’s a hint:  you’re sitting in it right now.  Your body.  It’s your business, it’s your family, it’s your mind, and it’s your life.  How well are you taking care of it?  What type of regular, on-going maintenance do you give it?  What type of fuel do you put in it?  Ask yourself “Am I taking better care of [...]

Last week I discussed the importance of creating a morning ritual  and how it can greatly impact your day. This week, we are going to talk about the other bookend of a successful day, your evening ritual. Before we begin discussing ideas for creating your evening ritual, let’s discuss the number one reason for creating one: having adequate and quality sleep. We’ll review the importance and benefits of sleep, then cover some key DO’s and DON’TS for setting up your evening ritual. I’m even going to share with you my own personal ritual that has helped me sleep better, recover faster and have the energy I need to be successful in my life (footed ‘jammies not included). A good night [...]
